SARI KEMPPINEN 20.4.2024 – 12.5.2024
Last year marked the 20th anniversary of my first solo exhibition. During those years, I have been able to pursue numerous interesting projects. Even though my works may have changed outwardly over the years, many themes have remained the same: reflections on the strata of time, generations, forgetting, change, a culture of slowness. My works are often sensitive in nature, but you can also sense an underlying silent social criticism. The world we live in is far from perfect.
Three-dimensionality has crept into my works in recent years. The use of light and the shadows formed by it in my work has brought greater depth and stratification to the content. My works are created slowly, one loop at a time. I believe that the state of presence becomes visible in a slowly building work. I mainly use crochet as a technique. Crochet makes me especially happy because it takes me back to happy childhood memories and at the same time I feel a strong connection with previous generations of our family who made handicrafts. Being in your place and at the same time being part of a continuum of hundreds of years.
