SAMULI HEIMONEN

Young Artist of the Year 2008, Samuli Heimonen (b. 1975) presents animals as a metaphor for human emotion, imbuing the figures with something essentially human.

KIM SIMONSSON

Sculptor Kim Simonsson (b. 1974), Young Artist of the Year 2004, creates his work using ceramic, a lesser-used material in contemporary art. Simonsson’s almost life-size child and animal figures are influenced by Japanese Manga.

ANTTI TANTTU

Antti Tanttu (b. 1963), Professor of Printmaking at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts, is known for his panel paintings. His works are an exploration of personal and interpersonal experiences of existence. In 2006, Tanttu was recognised with the Kalevala Society’s inaugural Akseli Gallen-Kallela Award.

KRISTIINA UUSITALO

Painter Kristiina Uusitalo (b. 1959), recipient of the State Prize for the Arts 2008 is a depicter of Finnish nature and scenery. Her treatment of these at once private and shared landscapes brings them to reflect the gaze of the 21st century viewer.
