TERO LAAKSONEN

The artist Tero Laaksonen (b. 1953) has been awarded the Pro Finlandia Prize. The first thing one often finds in his works is a pictorial theme built around a set of antique articles. The works convey dreaminess, sensitivity and frailty, but on the other hand, the recognisable historicality of the objects depicted inspires viewers to ponder on time and timelessness.

Sculptor Mikael Pohjola (b. 1962) now uses wood as his material. Pohjola has himself said of his works: “The extraordinariness and beauty of the materials are best expressed in a completely useless form and space – as an organised sculpture.” In a sculpture significance can also be found in what is not sculpted: the empty space within the work.

Her recent works are reflections of her life and experiences in Africa during the past few years. However, distanced and diluted through a Finnish mentality.” Simple African forms are the fountain and inspiration of my expression”, Rantanen says and continues: “These works have been painted in Rome, in the heart of European culture, so the synthesis can be interesting.”

KATARINA REUTER

Having recently mounted a wide-ranging retrospective exhibition of her work at the Amos Anderson Art Museum in late 2008 and early 2009, the artist Katarina Reuter (b. 1964) often uses various technics in her work. Her works associate natural as well as mental landscapes. When the microcosmos and macrocosmos appear simultaneously, the multidimensionality of reality becomes apparent.

PASI TAMMI

The paintings by artist Pasi Tammi (b. 1971) succeed in simultaneously depicting a strong physical presence and a moment that is over before our perceptions are able to capture it.
