We are hurtling around in a vast cosmic system. Day gives way to night as the Earth spins around its axis. My camera is firmly fixed on the ground and is recording traces of the stars, representing motion and the passage of time in visible form. By monitoring the stars with the camera I was able to create a picture of the Earth´s rotation.

We can see a few thousand stars with naked eye, but it takes a camera to reveal the myriads of stars to be found in space. Their light travels huge distances and is very old. it is possible to see a light when its source has been extinct for millions of years. As we look at our neighbouring galaxy, that of Andromeda, we can appreciate our own place on the edge of the Milky Way and our insignificance. What is the true scale of the cosmos? We can see a microcosmos, at least, in the ice on the surface of a small lake.
