Kristiina Uusitalo 6.3. - 3.4.2010
Far brighter than a cloud that carries the sun
I have sought to paint the transformation of time and place into the antitheses of each other. Where the natural characteristics of the seasons have become blurred, there also time and place seem to have exchanged roles. The landscape that I had believed was permanent has changed forever. Time that I imagined was escaping has been frozen into the experience that I have already witnessed. A familiar forest has collapsed into light as the trees have disappeared, but the light itself is the same as before at this time of the year. I could still be a child or already an old woman.
I paint on aluminium sheets as if it were aquarelle paper. I strive for a means of immaterial expression that can capture the moment and the ever changing nature of reality. The character of the painting is created from the silver colour of the base material and the movement of the pigment with each brushstroke. The light-reflecting materials that I use change in appearance with the slightest movement of the observer. The illusion of motion that this creates reflects the flow of thought.
(The title is a quote from the writings of Hildegard von Bingen.)Kristiina Uusitalo
