The Wheel of Counter-Representations and Contrapositions

In my work I study the essence of life and the world. My paintings describe both construction and the collapse of structures as part of the essence of life and the world, which is created as a dialogue of connecting and separating between the canvas and the artist.

I create new worlds in which the attributes of the overall character of the painting are split into different variables. In the simultaneous expression of colour, the light of the elements and the direction of the light, as well as the visual channels of the optical greys, create energy and a counterpoint to meanings. The cohesion is manifested in the diversity; the connecting inner energy is manifested in different forms whose movement is the breathing of life.

Ambiguity and representation, figure and abstract, symbol and concept, anomaly and taxonomy, microcosms and macrocosms, that which crystallises and that which is crystallised are intertwined as the essence of an irrationally rational world.

Markus Heikkerö

Markus Heikkerö (born 1952) began his career as an artist in 1969, when he debuted in Helsinki. The following year Lahti Art Museum presented a controversial exhibition of the erotic-surrealistic art of Heikkerö, who was then just 18. A member of the postmodern generation of Finnish painters, Heikkerö has enjoyed a long and colourful career as both an artist and art instructor. Heikkerö spent most of the 1990s in the USA painting and teaching. In 1999 he held a private exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, and his works can be found in collections both in Finland and abroad.
