Minna Jatkola 22.1.-8.2. 2004Tunnel of love
Examining the elements of and manner in which a three-dimensional illusion of space is created on a two-dimensional surface has been one of the essential starting points for my works in this exhibition.
In the art of painting, space is often perceived as a continuum of colour variation, perspective and brilliance. However, just the slightest suggestion is enough for us to perceive the existence of space in a two-dimensional image. In my paintings, I prefer to describe different modes of experiencing and being in a certain space rather than replicate existing locales. I also address the concept of space in my paintings through social surroundings. Home, for example, becomes personal space when juxtaposed with public space and the reality around us. My paintings usually depict people portrayed relative to their surroundings, which in turn may be a mere impression of the actual environment.
My works combine areas of painting and drawing, a blend of techniques I find fascinating because of the characteristics peculiar to the two. The two-dimensional nature of a painting can be emphasised by playing around with techniques, which nonetheless also allow questions of content to be introduced: is the painted image more real than a drawing, do painted areas rate higher than areas with drawing only?
A combination of different techniques in the same painting is an interesting experiment, especially when the painting consists of several discrete spaces and occurrences that come together as a whole. It’s not so much about temporally simultaneous matters as it is about issues that are linked by a contentual theme. My perception of reality is made up of fragmented observations and my experiences of the world are created through issues that I find important. These are the issues I also wish to express in the form of paintings.
